Phillip A. Doerfler, Ph.D.

Associate Investigator, Hematopoiesis and Immunology Program, Versiti Blood Research Institute

Biography

Dr. Doerfler is an Associate Investigator at the Versiti Blood Research Institute and Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin. His research centers on interventional genomics for β-hemoglobinopathies, with a focus on fetal hemoglobin regulation, genetic modifiers of disease severity, and genome integrity following therapeutic genome editing in hematopoietic stem cells.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Hillsdale College in 2010 and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 2015, where he trained in gene therapy under Dr. Barry J. Byrne. He completed postdoctoral training  in the laboratory of Dr. Mitchell J. Weiss at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where his research focused on hematology, functional genomics, and the molecular regulation of fetal hemoglobin.

His laboratory integrates genome editing, functional genomics, epigenomics, and single-cell technologies to understand the molecular basis of blood disorders and to develop safer and more effective genetic therapies for sickle cell disease and β-thalassemia. His research has been supported by the Cooley's Anemia Foundation, Versiti Blood Research Institute Foundation, and National Institutes of Health.

Originally from Allen Park, Michigan, Dr. Doerfler is committed to fostering a collaborative research environment and mentoring the next generation of scientists.
