Phillip Doerfler

Phil joined the Versiti Blood Research Institute and the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2024. His research centers on interventional genomics for β-hemoglobinopathies, including hemoglobin switching, genetic modifiers of disease severity, and genome stability in gene-edited blood stem cells.
Phil earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Hillsdale College in 2010 and his PhD from the University of Florida in 2015, where he trained in gene therapy under Dr. Barry Byrne. He completed postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Mitch Weiss at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, studying hematology and functional genomics with a focus on fetal hemoglobin regulation. He is originally from Allen Park, MI, and is committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists.
